2008 Isuzu Ascender - Review

The 2008 Isuzu Ascender is lacking the brand recognition and third-row seat that has attracted so many automotive consumers to its competitor's mid size SUV offerings. However, the Ascender's rugged construction, stylish trim levels and low price help make this 5 passenger mid size SUV stand out in the crowded sport utility vehicle marketplace.

The only available trim is the 'S' model, which is available in rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive and comes standard with dual zone air conditioning, stereo system with CD player, machine finished alloy wheels and flip and tumble rear seats to conveniently increase cargo space when needed. Standard safety features include an electronic stability system, anti-lock brakes, frotn and overhead airbags,a tire pressure monitoring system and daytime running lights.

As opposed to various trim models, the Ascender can be customized by adding one of the reasonably priced option packages to the base model. The Preferred Equipment Package includes privacy glass, velour seating, a cargo cover, remote keyless entry, and exterior side moldings with chrome inserts as well as cruise control and the Universal Home Remote system. The LS Option Package adds an upgraded stereo system with 6 CD changer and 6 speakers, a roof rack, power moon roof and a leather wrapped steering wheel. The Luxury Package includes a special monotone paint job and color coordinating rocker and side moldings, heated leather trimmed seats and a premium Bose audio system. All options packages are priced under $2100 and can be purchased separately or in any combination of the three.

Although there are more advanced mid size SUVs on the market, the 2008 Isuzu Ascender has low range gear ratios and a body on frame construction that make this vehicle very capable during off road excursions, something not as easily achieved by other vehicles in this category. However, the real attraction is the low sticker price. Even the 4WD model has a MSRP of under $30,000, making it is one of the most affordable mid size 4WD SUV's available today.

Looking more like a taller version of a sport performance wagon and feeling more like a superior handling full size luxury sedan, the EX35 has much of the hardware and soul of the popular Infiniti G35 Sedan.

The EX35 is available in two trims, the Base model and the Journey edition. Both models come standard with rear-wheel drive with an advanced all-wheel drive system that will automatically adjust itself to accommodate the needs of various driving conditions as an option. Providing power to the EX35 is a 3.5 liter V6 that generates up to 297 horsepower. The standard 5 speed automatic transmission includes a manual shift mode. Standard safety features include a tire pressure monitoring system, a full array of airbags, traction control and a 4 wheel anti lock braking system.

The Base model EX comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, a power driver seat, single-zone automatic climate control, a CD stereo with an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio, a keyless ignition system, and a sunroof. The Journey adds a sunroof, leather upholstery and power folding second row seats that increase the cargo area. Both the Base and Journey models include eye appealing black lacquer and aluminum trim.

A Premium Options Package is available and provides an upgraded Bose sound system that includes a CD player and iPod functionality, Bluetooth technology capabilities and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. The Luxe Elite Options Package offers higher quality leather upholstery, 18-inch wheels and xenon headlights. The optional Technology Package offers a navigation system, 360 degree monitor that provides additional insight all around the vehicle, a lane departure warning system and cruise control

2008 Infiniti G37 - Review

With its innovative new VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift) 3.7L V6 engine, the redesigned G35 coupe, now called the 2008 Infiniti G37 coupe, boasts 330hp. Despite the 5 horsepower boost, the G37 yields improved fuel efficiency over last year, 17mpg city and 24mpg highway. The G37 ships in three trim levels, the Base, Journey, and Sport 6MT, all with a standard 6-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

Besides the G37, the class of 2-door, 4-passenger luxury sports coupes is the domain of some legendary members, including BMW's 335i. This year, a change of guard is in order due to the strong marks the Infiniti G37 is earning. Ever since the G35 hit car show venues, its beautiful styling drew a lot of attention. This year, G37's beauty goes even deeper. All six option packages for the G37 offer some impressive features including the Technology Package with Intelligent Cruise Control which maintains a follow distance from the vehicle ahead. The 4-Wheel Active Steer Package (4WAS) enables the rear wheels to steer up to 1 degree, directed by sensors.

Pulling away from traffic on mountain curves is a worthy test of the G37's new suspension and power. Cornering is G37 strength, with stiffer springs and substantial sway bars; it puts the side bolsters on the seats to the test. The Infiniti keeps you in touch with the machine by presenting the driver and passengers with cockpit silence broken only by the impressive exhaust note.

The 2008 Infiniti G37 is equipped for collision protection with driver and front passenger airbags, side impact and curtain airbags, and all-important crumple zones to prevent intrusion into the cockpit in the event of a collision. Brake Assist, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and stability control are standard. Many successful automotive models are unable to improve on their individual successes, but for 2008, it looks like the Infiniti G37 has rolled out another winner

The QX56 is styled with a nice bodyline that flares out as it reaches the back quarter panel; giving this SUV its tough look and commanding presence on the road.

The Infiniti boasts a powerful 5.1 liter, 320 horsepower, V-8 engine that allows it nearly 400 ft-lb of torque with a towing capacity of up to 9000 lbs. on the 2WD, while the impressive AWD model can haul up to 8900 lbs. The transmission is a beefy 5-speed automatic that is electronically controlled to adapt to the driver's style of driving.

The QX56 comes standard with a power moonroof, complete with tinted glass, as well as a roof rack and running boards. Consumers will also be impressed with the standard heated mirrors, Sonar System in the rear, and leveling suspension. Infiniti has also equipped this vehicle with several safety features, such as ABS brakes, traction control and airbags mounted in the front, side and roof.

The interior of the Infiniti QX56 is luxuriously decked out with leather appointed, heated front and second-row seating and leather and polished aluminum trim. The ergonomically designed instrument panel is enhanced with voice recognition as well as Infiniti's touch screen enabled Hard Drive System. Infiniti's Music Box system allows storage for a maximum of 2,900 selections while the Bose 12-speaker sound system offers high quality sound which is tuned to the acoustics of the cabin.

Infiniti has gone above and beyond in the QX56 by offering standard features such as power vent windows for third-row passengers, front and rear climate controls, overhead storage, a second console for mid-cabin passengers and 12 beverage holders throughout the vehicle. The 2008 QX56 also offers the driver a heated steering wheel, illuminated keyless entry, and a Bluetooth-capable phone system.

For the starting price, of $52,450, the 2008 Infiniti QX56 does provide value that exceeds that of the Land Rover Sport for its lack of standard amenities. And, though it only offers a slightly better mpg rating of 12 city and 18 highway, it is definitely a better choice.

The 2008 Honda Civic Coupe is arguably well on its way to becoming the most popular small car in the United States. Also available as a sedan, the coupe version is available in 5 trims to accommodate the cost conscious economy car driver as well as those who hunger for sport performance in a sharp looking fuel efficient coupe. With a proven track record for safety, security, performance and passenger comfort, the Civic Coupe has earned its stellar reputation and the market share needed to start increasing the cost of this popular vehicle. This year's Civic Coupe is slightly heavier and more luxurious than previous model years, and it is no longer the manufacturers smallest compact car. But for the majority of small car shoppers and younger drivers seeking a sporty yet affordable ride, the Civic remains a favorite choice.

Once one of the least expensive compact cars in America, the price of the Civic Coupe is definitely on the rise, but still remains within reason and is more than justified by the increased features and functionality, which are enhanced by Honda's long term reliability ratings. For those on a tight budget, the Base DX offers a minimal amount of interior features such as power windows, a height adjustable driver's seat and a tilt steering wheel. The LX adds air conditioning, power door locks, keyless entry, 4 speaker CD/MP3 stereo system with auxiliary jack and 16 inch steel wheels. The Civic EX is equipped with all the basics plus 16 inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, and a 60/40 split rear seatback to conveniently create more cargo room when needed. The EX-L is an all new addition to the already extensive list of Civic trims and adds heated leather seats. The high performance Civic Si has most of features found in the EX plus a high-output engine, sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, a premium audio system and special interior trim. Option packages include a high-performance summer tire package for the Si and a navigation system package for the Si and EX/EX-L models.

Civic Coupe DX, LX and EX models are powered by a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine that delivers 140 horsepower The power is delivered to the front wheels via the standard 5 speed manual transmission or an optional 5 speed automatic. The Si propels forth with the power of a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine that produces 197 horsepower and is mated to a unique 6 speed manual transmission with a limited slip front differential.

Regardless of which trim you choose, the stylish 2008 Honda Civic Coupe can be expected to deliver a comfortable, fun and safety rich ride. This steadfast performer with its appealing looks and quick engine has always held one of the top spots in the above average resale value category, and the 2008 model is expected to follow in the path of its predecessors.

2008 Honda Civic Hybrid -Review

With a fuel economy rating of 40mpg city and 45mpg highway, 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid is the perfect car to face the deep recession we are entering. Garnering a "Best" 10/10 score for greenhouse emissions by the EPA bestows upon the owner of the Civic Hybrid the "Part of the Solution" environmental accolade. Unchanged from 2007, the new Civic Hybrid is a 4-door family sedan that is capable of carrying 5 passengers.

Powered by a 1.3L 4-cylinder engine, the Civic Hybrid offers 110hp power, with 20hp coming from its electric motor. It's not all wine and roses for the Civic Hybrid since in order to get the best fuel economy you must drive slower and more cautiously than you are used to. The trick is to start from a stop very slowly, without any sudden accelerating. With the exception of being at a full stop, the gas motor is almost always running, not like some hybrids which can tool around using the electric motor only.

Adding to the visual appeal of the 2008 Civic are its color matched side view mirrors and attractive swage line and ground treatment along the sides of the vehicle. The windshield is angled in a daring cab forward position and the standard wheel covers are decidedly high tech inspired. Not only are these treatments esthetically attractive but they help improve Civic's fuel economy by reducing drag.

No need to think you must sacrifice amenities to earn the fuel saving benefits of owning a Civic Hybrid. Civic offers a Satellite Navigation System that is voice-activated, a powerful 110 watt stereo system, and air conditioning with its own motor to keep you cool, even when stopped. Although the Civic misses in the category of performance, with other hybrids such as Prius being better highway performers, overall the style, fit and finish of the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid still keeps it high on the list of top hybrid sedans

2008 GMC Acadia -Review

The 2008 GMC Acadia is a large cross over vehicle that has been a consumer favorite since its introduction in 2007. Differentiating it from its competitors is its ability to comfortable transport up to 8 passengers with a good amount of their belongings in the back. While most cross over vehicles on the market today combine a lot of sport and very little actual utility, the Acadia is actually one cross over that offers an athletic appearance with increased functionality due to its large size and cargo capacity, without losing the sport/luxury car ambiance.

Though off road capabilities are limited, the Acadia provides a powerful, comfortable and elegantly designed mode of transportation. Three trim levels are available to satisfy the various needs of those who are looking to purchase a 7-8 passenger vehicle that performs exceptionally well during every day driving excursions as well as long trips. The base model SLE is well equipped with 18 inch alloy wheels, power windows and door locks, a 6 speaker stereo system that accommodates both CD's and an MP3 player, front and rear air conditioning, cruise control and remote keyless entry. The SLT1 offers heated outside mirrors, stunning machine polished wheels, luxurious heated leather upholstery, triple zone climate control and a Bose stereo system with 10 speakers, in dash 6 CD changer, subwoofer and steering wheel mounted audio controls. The top of the line SLT2 adds satellite radio, a rear parking assist system, power rear lift gate, remote start and a crystal clear rear seat entertainment center. Other options include a windshield instrument display, navigation system; sun roof and Dolby 5.1 surround sound system that includes audio controls in the cargo area. All models are available with either the standard 7 passenger seating arrangement or an optional 8 passenger seating configuration.

A 3.6-liter V6 that delivers 275 horsepower mated with a very responsive 6 speed automatic transmission propels this large vehicle forward with ease. A mid range tow/trailer package is availabe that provides a towing capacity of 4500 pounds. The optional advanced AWD system keeps the Acadia steady and sure footed on snow covered or wet roads. Fuel economy is pretty good considering the size of this vehicle, with gas mileage averages coming in at approximately 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.

Depending on how you choose to arrange the third row seat, cargo space ranges from 19 cubic feet with enough room left to seat 8 passengers comfortably, or 117 cubic feet when you have more stuff than people to transport. Overall, the 2008 GMC Acadia provides a comfortable ride and handles well. It is unusual to find this type of performance and comfort in a cross over, and the price is right too
